Every 24th
June the Saint's day San Juan is celebrated, normally on the eve and in
seaside
locations
it is on the beach with bonfires. The whole of the Spanish coastline
is alight (possibly
as the English
one was when the Spanish Armada was approaching) It starts on the
eve of San
Juan on the
23rd. At midnight everyone rushes into the sea to symbolize the baptisms
by John
the Baptist.
The theory is that you wash your feet in the sea to cleanse your sins.
There is also
the tradition
of jumping the bonfire, to burn away your sins. Another custom is
to write your
three wishes
on a piece of paper and let them float out to sea and that they will come
true.
In El Brosque
the neighbours hold a Romeria. They do not start on the eve but on
the 24th June
with flamenco,
drinks and food and good company. The following day a procession leaves
the pueblo
with Saint
John drawn by horse and cart accompanied by other riders. After a
blessing by the
church the
social side begins with drinks and food, followed by a Paella provided
fee by the
local authority.
All day long there is music and dancing until the early hours of the following
day.
